Porto Maravilha is an urban revitalization project promoted by the city of Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to revitalize the port area of Rio de Janeiro, which has suffered great degradation since the 1960s due to lack of investment.

The project began in 2009 and since then it already has some finished constructions, such as the demolition of Perimetral high, which gave rise to the Rio450 Tunnel. Although some projects still haven’t left the papers, Porto Maravilha already has enough attractions to be an important tourist spot in the Wonderful City!

Historic and Archaeological Circuit of African Cultural Heritage

It’s a circuit that has activities and guided tours through the main points that mark the history and life dimension of Africans and their descendants in the Port Region of Rio. Visits include:

  • The Salt Stone
  • The José Bonifácio Cultural Center
  • The New Black Cemetery
  • The Pier of Valongo and the Empress
  • O Largo do Depósito
  • The Suspended Garden of Valongo

One of the points of the circuit, Largo do Depósito, is very close to the Hotel Pompeu, which makes it very easy to visit these and other points of the circuit!

Museum of Tomorrow

The Museum of Tomorrow is one of the projects of Porto Maravilha completed this year, and was received very positively by the locals and tourists. It’s located in Píer Mauá and the ticket costs only R$10.00.

Museu de Arte do Rio

The Museum of Art of Rio (MAR) is located very close to the Museum of Tomorrow, also in Píer Mauá. Its exhibits combine historical and contemporary art dimensions. The museum also has the mission of inscribing art in public education, through the School of Look, a neighboring building connected by a wave-shaped ceiling, one of the marks of the current national architecture.

What else is going on in Porto Maravilha?

We will not have to wait long for another attraction in Porto Maravilha: the largest aquarium in Latin America, AquaRio Marinho, will soon be inaugurated. The forecast for the inauguration is July 2016.
