National Museum of Fine Arts
Located at Av. Rio Branco, 199 – Downtown, the National Museum of Fine Arts has a collection of 15,000 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings of Brazilian and foreign artists, as well as a collection of decorative art, furniture, folk art and a set of African art pieces. It is a great choice for those who like arts and history in museums. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 6pm. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 12am to 5pm. Sunday admission is free. Tickets: R$ 8,00 full ticket, R$ 4,00 half ticket and family tickets (for up to 4 members of the same family) at R$ 8,00. Audioguides are available at R$ 8,00. Sale of tickets and entrance of visitors up to 30 min before the closing of the Museum.
Museum of Modern Art (MAM)
MAM is one of the most important museums in Brazil. Located in Flamengo Park, next to Santos Dumont Airport. On July 8, 1978, a fire destroyed 90% of its collection, mainly works by Picasso, Miró, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, and many others, in addition to all the works present in a great retrospective of Joaquin Torres García. After extensive restoration work, the Exhibition Block returned to operation in 1982. Between 1993 and 2002, the museum received donations from private collections of Gilberto Chateaubriand, about 4,000 works, including paintings by Cândido Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Lasar Segall and Di Cavalcanti, among others. Nowadays, the museum has many outdoor events, such as forró, art exhibitions, dance and music events, parties, etc. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday: 12 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday – Sunday – Holidays-11am-6pm. The box office closes at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition hall does not open on: 01-19 Jan, 14-18 Feb, 03 Apr, 24 and 25 Dec.
Museum of Life
The Museum of Life was inaugurated on May 25, 1999. The space of integration between science, culture and society aims to educate and inform in a creative way, through exhibitions, interactive activities, multimedia, plays and laboratories. Located in a wide green area, at Av. Brasil, 4365 – Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro. The Casa de Oswaldo Cruz initiative seeks to broaden the population’s participation in issues related to health, science and technology. The Museum is open all year round, from Tuesday to Friday, from 9am to 4:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.
Museum of Art of Rio (MAR)
The museum has eight exhibition halls in about four thousand square meters, divided into four floors. The Escola do Olhar (former Civil Police Hospital), home of the educational program of MAR, is the gateway to the Museum. The complex also includes an area of the former Mauá Square Bus Terminal. Located at Plaza Mauá, 5 – Downtown, Rio de Janeiro, open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with tickets at R$ 4.00 (half) and R$ 8.00 (full) and free on Tuesdays.
Museum of Tomorrow
The Museum of Tomorrow, inaugurated on December 19, 2015, is located at Praça Mauá, 1 – Downtown. The Museum is an environment of ideas, explorations and questions that invites the public to reflect on how we want to live – with the planet and between us. It represents new kinds of science museums where you are invited to examine the past, know the current transformations and imagine possible scenarios for the next 50 years through immersive audiovisual environments, interactive installations and games available to the public in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Kids will love it! Schedule: Monday – closed. Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun – from 10am – 17pm.
